Absolutely. A relatively benevolent dictator, he stabilized the country and then stepped aside.

You will never sell that POV in this country. The left here made him a whipping boy. Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek made a Movie that proved we were the evil cause of all of it. JohnM will tell you all about it.

By soviet standards:- Some democide estimates, 1970-1987.

The former USSR officer gave me the impression that the soviet union was still very dangerous right up till it broke up. i.e lots of guys disappearing in gulags. Here is some numbers I looked up..

[the 'low', 'median', 'high' are estimates taken from various sources that are listed]

Consolidated Camp populations.
1970 -1982 low 1,000,000 median 3,000,000 high 4,000,000
1983 -1987 low 1,000,000 median 4,000,000 high 5,000,000

Consolidated Camp deaths
1970- 1982 low 130,000 median 780,000 high 1,456,000
1983- 1987 low 25,000 median 200,000 high 350,000

Of course, things were much better then earlier periods. Extended back to 1954, the numbers are worse..

1954- 1987 median USSR population 241,720,000
1954-1987 mid est democide deaths 6,872,000

or a democide rate of 2.74%

Before then was real bad.
