The early industrial revolution was horrendous because there was no social brake on it. Under feudal law, and mercantilism, which developed out of feudal law, wages and hours and working conditions were regulated.

I prefer free trade, but not so bloody that it has no regard for the health and well-being of laborers.

Now we have come full circle and again wages and hours and working conditions are regulated.

I'd say unfettered capitalism cocked things up.
