Consumers are hit from all directions at once.
First, why spend your savings when it's been cut in half if you owned stock? Need to save for retirement or college.

Next, why spend when you're afraid if you lose your job you wont find another good one? Or if you dont have a job at all? Third, gas prices and higher state taxes will negate any federal income tax reduction. Fourth, the war makes people cautious. Fifth, if you stay at home (to watch CNN or because gas is expensive) you're not as likely to buy.

What this translates into are low corporate earnings except for a few essential or trendy items. Gas-mask and duct tape sales, for instance, have soared, as Bush has warned us about Saddam attacking us here at home. After all he WAS behind 9-11, right? gg
