The Bush can only sock it to the middleclass and get re-elected by achieving two things: 1) Keep the country at war, or at least make most people believe we're at war even if no terrorist has attacked us in 3 years 2) Successfully assassinate the character of the democratic challenger using surgical disinformation strikes, overwhelming superiority in the media and ability to buy hundreds of millions in negative TV ads. They also need to cover-up their own crimes, failures and misdemeanors at the same time and make sure the mainstream media doesn't report them. Best way to do that, back to starting another war. If Bushies can do these two things they can keep us in recession and record deficits and perhaps still win.
