<< the perception (fostered by 20 years of weak responses) that America was a paper tiger, seemingly strong but with a glass jaw, unable to take casualties, which led to f) the perception that AQ et. al. were strong and on the rise.>>>
9-11 brought the US out of the closet. The "real" US has stood up and demonstrated the power that lies behind the Administrations words- that we will seek out Terrorism wherever it exists and eliminate it.
Debate, inspections, agreements, sanctions, inspections had proved futile for many years, leading nations to develop ways to bypass by relabeling products, using third or fourth Nations to countries to deliver or ship the goods, or just plain ignoring them.
. Action of some form was required to deal with the problem, or else statements of US leaders and policies ,
which have many inconsistences, would continue to be ignored as just more talk with no teeth.
And Terrorism continued to increase.
The US will sheath its sword when Iraq capitulates and order is restored, but the demonstration of its powers has been made on stage before the audience of all Nations. And every ten years those powers will increase tenfold.
We have not even pulled all the Genies out of the box and shown them yet

It appears ,in Arab Nations or dictatorships, that censored television has been and will be a problem if the Iraqi Defense Minister's appearances are an example of what is displayed or said. And I suppose, US TV and movies are regarded as a jokes or distortions which is not far from the truth.
There is much commentary and fear about what the US will do next, but there should be much hope that that
the best results are achieved
1. Because we have the entire World's attention and leaders will have to listen and assume it is more than just more political BS.
2. And therefore, what is presented as a plan ( for Iraq) must be something generally regarded a "fair" and that
countries who plan to deal or trade with Iraq should foot some of the costs for our efforts to make it a free and productive Nation. Which can be accomplished by contributions of any sort, by UN Nations
3. GWB is not in trouble here. All he has to do is concentrate on the next goal acceptable to the majority of citizens and present it very clearly ( he is good at that) so that both we and other Nations leaders will be able to understand those goals and feel secure that the US position will not be shifting back and forth.
My guess is that considerable thought will be given to nuclear proliferation and definitions of such things as WMD's and who should be permitted develop or possess them.
Things well covered and discussed here on the Thread
