Possibly I've always thought there was an evolutionary explanation. I think humanity has probably been stabilized by the fact that most people are groupists. You don't want too many people who are free thinkers in a primitive society. You need a few, but too many would get in the way of collaborative effort. Of course now that our civilization is more advanced, I think our groupist tendencies get in the way more than they help us- but that's just my opinion, based on where I would like to see humanity go.
