In my previous life I worked in a building that housed a nuclear reactor. One of our physics professors did some work with neutron irradiation of gemstones. I guess the neutrons induced dislocations that resulted in color centers. You could tweak the color by annealing the gems (and reordering the crystal). I guess the commercial folks didn't want the color to change if you got caught in a house fire <g>.
