Yes, it is difficult to find a 'documentary' that does start with a predetermined premise that is built up through the film. There are very few true 'documentaries' in the sense that they have a completely neutral viewpoint. I thought that Burns' The Civil War was pretty neutral, but I'm sure someone will see a north or south slant in it somewhere. The issue of free speech in school is getting hot. I think that if someone teaches the kids to look at all sides of the issues, then they should be allowed to show controversial information as long as other sides are represented. However, I recognize that this is very challenging. For example, around MLK day, do you present some pro-KKK material to 'balance' it out? If not, then you have to judge which 'views' are appropriate, and how can someone with preconceived leanings do so objectively (a common complaint from the right who see most teachers as 'left-leaning')? It is a tough job. I do believe that the schools that make those choices should be careful to communicate them to the parents, to either give them a chance to leave their kids out, or counterbalance the presented material.
