US forces claiming to launch grand offensive in Baghdad

BAGHDAD: Fighting in Baghdad moved closer to the Tigris river that runs through the heart of the Iraqi capital on Monday as shells of the A-10 tanks exploded near the city centre presidential palace compound, a French news agency war correspondent reported.



A US military official dubbing the new US offensive on Baghdad 'a truly big ground attack' in which the allied ground forces are using tanks and other heavy arsenal against the Iraqi troops defending the capital of Iraq.



Fighting raged into the heart of the Iraqi capital as US forces attacked the presidential palace compound which was rocked by five huge blasts.
