Although the long-sleeve clothing was quite odd for a 90+ degree day, the plumes of smoke implied it was a recent outing.

What also gave me some doubts was the point when Saddam rolled his eyes upward and to the side. The whites of his eyes just seemed strange, as if they were too deeply set and possibly behind a foam mask. The state of the art in disguise is pretty incredible these days. Right out of Mission Impossible II, where Tom Cruise pulls his "face" off..

But you're right about the smoke. That would seem to be the best evidence that it was current.. And I agree that he would have taken the time to give a speech or something, if he was going to be "out and about"..

But the "smoking gun", IMO, is the lack of that bodyguard. He'd go whereever the current seat of power resided, given him connections and trust-worthiness.

Jeff... I was discussing the bodyguard issue with someone today and they brought a quite feasible explanation for why he would be seen with the Iraqi defense minister...

As an enforcer... To ensure the DM said, and did, exactly what Saddam was ordering...

Hadn't contemplated that scenario before, and am kicking myself for not seeing the possibility...

And it shows how we shouldn't focus on one bit of info to base our decisions upon..
