Hi TC and All,

Sorry for the delay in responding, but I didn't have a chance to even try any of the suggestions until a few days ago. Ended-up getting four (4) new custom medical reporting programs which had to be installed and made operational on my office and home server and workstations the very next day after I posted my problem (they're separate, but integrated programs). If you think you've got problems with retail programs, try these astronomically expensive medical programs that everyone in the medical field is being forced to use now because of both insurance carriers and the new privacy laws. Even my monitors have to be hidden from the eyes of everyone other than staff members! Still trying to make them do what they're supposed to do. Tech support is great, but the programs aren't! It would seem that the doctors have become the beta testers {:>).

Getting back to my notebook problem (message 33602) Message 18806701
my messenger service was already disabled. Thanks.

Marty

TC and all,

With reference to my post ( Message 18806701 ), I did what I probably should never have done, but it seems to have solved the problem... at least one of them. I noticed that the speech "blurb" (for lack of a better term) kept popping up on the screen. I went into control panel and unchecked or disabled or deleted "speech"... don't remember which..., but at least I don't have ID and password blocks with what looked like instant messenger moving going across so that I couldn't log in. Strangely, the speech "blurb" was written in what looked like Russian or a slavic language... not the IM-like words in the fill-in blocks, but the cartoon-like "cloud" that appeared at the top of the screen. That too has now disappeared.

The other problem (slowdown of the notebook computer using WIN XP Pro) still exists... and this computer really was fast. Is it possible that bad patch from Microsoft was automatically downloaded? I had my notebook set-up to notify me of available downloads of patches, etc., but not to automatically download them. I forgot which patch it was and would appreciate if anyone can post it so I can check ADD/DELETE software and delete it if it's there. I even forgot where to look to make sure I don't automatically download anything else!!! Me dumb!!

Unfortunately, Compaq doesn't come with an entire CD version of WIN XP Pro. They have their own version which is already installed when you get the computer... and doesn't come with any discs or CDs to reinstall the OS... only CDs with certain components. Apparently they have some proprietary things in their version of WIN XP Pro. IMO, that's bad news. Given the option, I'd love to reformat the hard drive and do a clean install of everything... but that doesn't seem to be an option. Anyone have any suggestions as to why the computer has suddenly slowed down... on the assumption that I don't have that patch installed? Also, any suggestions as whether it's possible to buy a retail version of XP Pro or WIN 2000 and do a clean install on a Compaq Evo notebook (it was available from the factory with either OS)? Using NTFS format on everything (servers, workstations and notebook) and was very happy with WIN 2000 Pro, but I had to get the latest and supposedly more stable OS! ME STUPID!! Maybe I just got used to the old screens with file folders, etc. in 2000 Pro, but switching from one OS to the other can drive a person crazy... at least this person!

Many thanks for any input... and sorry again for the long post. Getting very frustrated!!

Marty
