Rumsfeld's style is consistent with a broader theme in the White House -- the ends justify the means. We do whatever is expedient without regard for our own system of Government and without much regard for international relations or international law. We have engaged in many highly questionable initiatives by invoking 9/11. Initially this worked well due to the enormous sympathy generated by 9/11. We have now exhausted the sympathy factor in the rest of the world by adopting the Bush Doctrine and alienating most of the rest of the world. In America, we will feel good about a "victory" in Iraq. It is as yet unclear how things will go in Iraq in the long run, but for now, the military has performed beautifully, as it did in 1991. For now, Americans will feel relieved, the economy will perk up, and perhaps oil prices will moderate. In the longer term, we are in a slide towards a world in which to be American is to be hated. If hatred of America was the driving force behind 9/11, we have not solved the problem by invading Iraq. Time will tell.
