Ronald Reagan didn't bring it down.

Tim, whose opinion I truly respect, is wrong about this.

The Cold War would not be over today had it not been for Reagan's strength and military effectiveness, coupled with his vision for SDI. We won the war without firing a shot.

Just as last night's toppling of the Saddam statue and entering into Saddam's personal residence are powerful forces in showing the Iraqi people that the regime is finished, Reagan's total strength had the same effect on the Cold War Soviet Union. The famous "Tear Down This Wall" speech (certainly, the most important speech by a president in the last 50 years) was part of the same understanding and commitment.

This is for both DRay and Al.

Did you both notice the second part of my statement - "He was however one important factor in the process."

Al by quoting me out of context you make it seem like I think Reagan was not a significant factor in ending the cold war and liberating people from the yoke of the Soviet Empire. That is not my opinion.

DRay - " The Cold War would not be over today had it not been for Reagan's strength and military effectiveness, coupled with his vision for SDI. We won the war without firing a shot."

That certainly is possible but I would say rather that the cold war might not be over today.
