WAYNE, N.J. — Integrated Device Technology (IDT) is partnering with security chip developer SafeNet to produce a hardware/software virtual private networking reference platform for small- to medium-size enterprise applications.

The reference platform combines IDT's RC32438 MIPS-based processor with SafeNet's SafeXcel-1141 and SafeXcel-1741 co-processors. In addition, the platform comes equipped with a suite of VPN/firewall security software from Intoto.

The RC32428 is developed around a 32-bit MIPS CPU core. This processor includes a memory controller supporting DDR memory and a PCI interface capable of sustaining up to 160 Mbytes/s data transfer across the bus. The chip also includes an on-chip PCI arbiter and two 10/100 Ethernet ports.

The SafeXcel co-processors are aimed at low- to mid-range networking system designs. They provide support for SSL, IPSec, DES AES, 3DES and SHA-1. The 1141 supports a 50-MHz DMA interface and a 32-bit PCI bus. The 1741, on the other hand, delivers 260 Mbit/s of IPSec packet throughput.

The joint reference design will be on display at this week's Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco.
