Who is they? I know a number of reports that said he MAY be dead or injured. I know a number of guests, analysts, paid prognosticators, etc., on a number of stations openly speculated he was dead, but no one from the Bush Admin, the Pentagon, or Centcom said unequivocally, "Saddam is dead". I'm not really interested in talking heads, biased media hypsters or their guests speculating about things they have little or no first hand knowledge. I thought you meant those who actually have real intelligence, like the Bush Admin, the Pentagon, or Centcom.
