OT

John, taking this tangent off still further. I read an assertion that I found a bit incredible, I wonder if this might be common knowledge south of the line. The author of a book on the summer of 1945 said that, in planning for "Olympic" (the invasion of the Japanese home islands in 1945/6) they prepared for immense casualties in part by producing the expected number of Purple Hearts needed. He said that the U.S. military has yet to use up that stockpile, notwithstanding Korea, Vietnam, etc.

That doesn't ring true, but I haven't researched it. Any thoughts?

Lets not forget, we are talking about the same GWB who prior to becoming president had never visited the UK. I doubt that at that point he would have known Gerry Adams from Sam Adams.
