In our state, the money from the tobacco industry settlement, supposedly to finance anti-smoking and associated tobacco problems, is being used in the general state budget for unrelated purposes. Alcohol causes just as great economic impact for any state as tobacco! Just greater acceptance and use of alcohol among the populace.

It also makes for a disincentive for smoking to the most cost-sensitive consumer - kids. Studies have shown that the higher the price, the less likely young adults are to start the habit.

"Get lost kid, you bother me"

Try and be a little more sincere.

Tobacco taxes are mostly just being mingled in with the general fund here in the US and not being targeted where they were promised. At least that is the way it is in CA where they are even securititizing "future tobacco settlement payments" to balance the budget, bloated by fiscal mismanagement.
