I wouldn't say that Saddam had them under his thumb. The costs of opposing US were far greater than cooperating. I don't think Bush would have a problem using the Iraqi oil to pay them off.

But I also agree with you that they were not opposing US out altruism. The French are no better than anyone else. BTW, the opposition was not so personal in the begining. It esclated to the level of "I'll veto whatever you say". Earlier a better solution could have been found.

It is not so much that I see it as black & white; it is that in this particular case, the interest of France, Russia, and in fact all of the world imo, could have been met by establishing (or improving) an international legal system. Just because something is broken, doesn't mean you should throw it out instead of fixing it.
