they could very easily have shown their support for a US-led overturn of Saddam by backing away from agression towards US forces when we got there. I'm not saying they could have deserted their army, just that they could have backed away a little from agressive fighting.

Our leaders said the people would welcome the US as liberators, is that what happened would you say? Why not?

Are those folks in Basra fighting because someone is forcing them to would you say? Doesn't look like it to me. It looks like they are fighting like this is the fight of their lives.
