Paul Volker temporarily defeated inflation... by engineering a great recession. Then Reagan/Bush's massive deficit spending (especially toward the end of their second term) started the national debt SOARING again... business investment fell off, and long-term market rates climbed again because the markets saw the specter of inflation returning again.

Higher government borrowing - to finance the deficits - crowded out private borrowing and landed us in yet another recession.

Some fools never learn. Inflation never 'dies'... but it is periodically over-fed by politicians.
