If France, Russia and Germany had really cared "a fig" about Iraqi citizens, they would have done something about it long LONG ago. They even tried to sabotage the US at the UN.

I bet the US military is glad it can go about the Iraq campaign without obstruction by inferior allied armies. I have read an article that some friendly fire incidents involving British vehicles were caused by an insufficient compatibility between the US and British friend/foe recognition systems.

But instead, these 3 countries not only sold weapons of all sorts to Saddam, in addition have the largest oil conracts with the former dictator of Iraq...

Karen, this is an FAQ which has been addressed many, many times on the thread. France and Russia have been major weapon suppliers to Iraq but not Germany, see for instance #reply-18779907 #reply-18780439 #reply-18800882

They are still trying. Wanna bet they don't recognize the new Iraqi government after the summit?

The Associated Press The leaders of France, Russia and Germany -- the chief European opponents of the U.S.-led war in Iraq -- will be in St. Petersburg this week for meetings that are likely to focus on the continuing fighting and postwar reconstruction.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is also scheduled to visit....

They even tried to sabotage the US at the UN.

If France, Russia and Germany had really cared "a fig" about Iraqi citizens....

My main bone of contention is with France, who have cynically stabbed us in the back with their anti-war BS.

Germany has not taken any concrete measures to hinder our operation, we have had free use of our bases and hospitals there, as I've said before actions speak louder than words.

Russia was still in cold war mode when they sold most of their weapons to Iraq, and I discount their current position somewhat based on history. Germany has not been an arms supplier to Iraq, but France has.

France simply has no excuse for their behavior toward the US on this issue, it's nothing but mean spirited anti-Americanism on their politicians (and left leaning media personalities) parts. If there's a country whose state run businesses I want excluded from any profitable contracts when Iraq gets rebuilt, it's France.

Our government sold tons of military gear that was paid for, are you ready for this, agricultural aid grants to Iraq during the Iraq/Iran war... so, the fact that France, Germany and Russia have current contracts in Iraq does not change a thing...

if our foreign policy was based on principles, we wouldn't have sold Iraq all what we did during the 10 year war with Iran... we wouldn't have looked the other way when chemical weapons were used... we wouldn't have allowed Saddam Hussein to use fixed wing planes, in the no fly zone mind you, to massacre the people of the 1991 uprising... we wouldn't have walked away from the Kurds...

what our government is doing is in effect saying, we can not have contracts in Iraq because of the sanctions and it will expose our hypocrisy... so, let's find another avenue to get in... guess what, Saddam Hussein is horrible (which there is no doubt that he is... DUH)... he has weapons of mass destruction based on credible intelligence sources that we can not share with the world (which I think are cronies for the runaway thief Ahmad Chalabi who hopes to become Iraq's puppet president)... and we have to liberate the Iraqis... but you have to find an angle to hook the masses in a time of deteriorating economy with record numbers of foreclosures and bankruptcies... so, the humanitarian emotional aspect is played by the media ... and we have President George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States, now the Liberator of Iraqis and soon to be other nations around the world... waging a war on Iraq without a UN resolution... after all, he knows what is best for the world... that is what we need to think about.
