Mmmmm...in fairness I have to say I'm Canadian, so I suspect you'll lump me in your solution for France and Germany.

Nevertheless, We cater to every whim of that so called world forum is of course, terribly inaccurate. There are many, within and without the US, who'd argue the exact and extreme opposite, and they're equally inaccurate. The use of veto, political and economic suasion, backroom deals...all these the US has used in pursuit of its goals. Where it has gone along with other countries, or with the UN as a whole, it's only because in one way or another those decisions were deemed at least at the time to be in the interests of the US.

Don't get me wrong: this is what all countries do. I wouldn't expect different. We little gnats on the shoulder of the world do the same as much as we're able ;-)

I totally understand your frustration and anger. Countries the US very much wanted to stand shoulder to shoulder in this war felt for varying reasons they couldn't agree enough with the justification to join in the fight. You feel betrayed, in the same way that you'd feel personally betrayed if a friend refused to be at your side in a personal fight.

Still, it's not a failure of the UN that other countries would not join with the US in the war in Iraq. The fact that a Senator is unable to persuade others to support an important bill, one they believe passionately is critical to the well-being of the country, is not reason to disband the Senate.

I continue to believe that for all its imperfections, the lack of a common international forum would be more harmful to the interests of the world at large, including in the end the US, than to continue but work on the improvements it absolutely needs. The worst that could happen at this point is for the US to withdraw from the UN.

Best regards
