I think the figure of several hundred thousand was for the American forces only -- the expectation was that the Japanese casualties would have been significantly higher. That's been one of the justifications for using the Bomb -- somewhere between 100k and 200k casualties between Hiroshima and Nagasaki, vs. millions from an invasion.
