The camalot is placed so that the stem points in the direction of load that would result from a fall. A load causes the lobes of the camalot to rotate outward, i.e. to bite into the sides of the crack. The harder the fall, the harder the lobes bite. Sounds improbable, I know, but a properly placed camalot does work. I've personally proved this a number of times.
