If the UN could point to just one example where they haven't bungled it, I think we'd all feel better about it. Right now the idea is absurd. Annan, Chirac, and who's that guy - Linus? Schroeder? are starting to sound just as ridiculous as Baghdad Bob, who didn't show up for work today, btw.

Dana Priest has an excellent book on how the UN operates when they get to a place and start doing their thing. Most of the security people come from 3rd world places where goonism in policing is the common practice, and they carry those attitudes over. They shouldn't be allowed to do anything but humanitarian relief until the whole structure is revamped.
