But the whole thing is part of the national identity thing. so is that bad ? When I think Brasil I think Carnival. I mean that tradition used to make Christianity more acceptable is not really needed. I agree it's tired and old, let's turf it <g>

The money from selling the poppies in Britain was used for welfare for the old soldiers including those from WWII. It just became a day for remembering the dead from all wars.

Orthodox Jews still fast on 9 Av (Av is a month in the summer on the lunar calendar). Why? That was the day the Romans destroyed the temple in Jerusalem in 70AD - which marked the final stage of the destruction of the city. Over time all calamities were rolled into it.... including that Holocaust again (many refuse to mark the day that the State of Israel chose for the latter).
