Well my respects, really. I respect a guy who volunteered.
I was a gung-ho all-American kid who worshipped Sgt Rock growing up, but by 1974 forget about it.

I actually had the option of Swiss citizenship at 18 since I was born there and would have taken it if I'd been drafted. I was #2 out of 365 in the lottery and might have gotten nailed. By then the war was over anyway and there was nothing heroic about going there except to get killed for no reason. Back in the mid 60's it was different. There was a cause. John Wayne lived.

But I did my boot camp in a way. I did two months of wilderness survival training in Alaska at 17. Killed game with rocks and ate it half-raw as part of my survival training. Barf. Dont try half-raw porcipine. Actually, tastes like chicken. Also rock and ice climbed, climbed a dozen huge mountains, bivouaced on top of glacial mountains with no sleeping bag and swam in freezing oceans like a polar bear. Lived off berries and salmon burning 500 calories a day. I respect those 1st Mountain guys of ours a lot. I know their pain. But once you do it it doesn't hurt as much.

I became an environmentalist the day the Exxon Valdez spilled millions of barrels of oil in the same pristine Prince William Sound I survived in and loved so much. God's unspoiled country. One reason I have a special disliking for Bush-Cheney. They want to completely rape and abuse Alaska. They just dojnt care. Never trust Big Oil. I dont dislike Republicans for the most part, just these guys. They represent the worst to me. Though I know they have their strengths.

Oil companies are a necessary evil for now, but now we have a chance to replace the stuff in our lifetimes. John Kerry is the key though. If Bush gets re-elected we'll go further backwards. More pollution, oil-spills and more wars for oil, guaranteed. Plus all the rest.

Our military just won a great victory in Iraq. I hate Saddam Hussein types. But deep down I can't feel happy. We need to get back on a more positive track in this world. We need a balance and more honesty at least.

That's why I fight for Kerry. Because I know him and I trust him. I mean I know him personally. I've sat and talked with him about deep things. And he really listens. He also isn't anything like the attack artists want to portray him. He's just a great caring tough honest courageous and brilliant American. I would weep with relief if he were to run this country. And I'd know we could always trust him. All of us. Republicans too.

Kerry really doesn't have a partisan bone in his body. But is he a fighter. And a fierce one. Especially when he knows he's right. I truly belileve he will tear Bush apart. But it will be the good fight. The honest fight. And he knows it.
