- Put yourself in the position of a person born 30-40 years ago in Iraq. Such a person has no idea what democracy means, having been repressed for all/most of their life. To transform Iraq even into a pseudo-democracy will take many years. One's mindset need to re-adjust. Does not happen in a month or a year or 2.

That was exactly the situation in Italy in 1945. They had never had a Democracy. We took over with a Military Gov, and even the people running it said it could not be done. When we left two years later Italy had a Democracy.

KR, I edited my post to throw in the anti-America crowd too.

I truly believe that's the basis of this argument. Differing opposing factions have failed to date so now it's "hey, Iraq can't make anything of themselves" .... just more negativity.

Here's my thinking ..

You are right, an Iraqi born 40 years ago surely doesn't know freedom, democracy and they surely don't think as I do.

Differing experiences, different cultures.

I would assume whatever government evolves in Iraq will reflect the Iraqi people .... I don't envision some clone of America ....

I believe Germany and Japan are examples of differing peoples, differing cultures who took freedom and their opportunity to develop their own governments reflecting their own societies.

Clones of America ? Not even close.

Free .... yep

Better off than before .... yep

Hopefully, a bright future ... yep

History will one day show what Iraq makes of this opportunity.

They may succeed, they may fail but at least it will be their choice.
