Actually I seem to remember them being called M-1s but as that is the number of a tank I assumed I misremembered and said M-16. And seems they are really light too. These guns were not the most common in Israel 15 years ago. They were just huge and very unwieldy. The standard assault rifle was the Galil. Uzis were mainly used by civil defence. For example if you were organizing a field trip in geology (I studied geography and economics at Hebrew University) you went to the police and they issued you with Uzis to protect the group. This was required by law for any organized group. One of the tests for rock type was "try to scratch the rock with the Uzi... " that means with the metal of the gun not shoot it :)
