I'm not sure what you mean by 'illegal' war.

I believe wars are judged on their moral goals and actions. It remains to be seen if the stated goals will really be achieved, but the actions so far have been as moral as war can get. Avoiding civilian casualties even at risk to the troops; targeting the opposition while avoiding the countries important post-war assets; respecting the Islamic mosques, again at risk of life and limb. Avoiding even the appearance of invasion by not raising American flags over captured sites (an almost universal action in war) helps show that the US troops are indeed liberating the people of Iraq.

Getting the war over quickly is the only way to truly minimize loss of life, and give Iraq back to its people.
