After reading From Beirut to Jerusalem I was less than impressed with Arafat. I don't know if the book presents a fair picture of the man, and I need to read more, but I think he really let the Palestinians down in negotiations. Of course I think the US needed to be more firm with Israel in making them come to the table. So I don't think it was just Hamas- it never seems to be as simple as one thing in the ME, problems there are like hydras- cut one head off, and more grow back.
