i've been running NAV inside of nsw2002 on win98se, win2000 and winxp home. yesterday i picked up nsw2003 at staples for free (after rebates). i was going to wait for 2004 with hopes for unpacking improvements, but all at once the virus def subscription was running out on winxp. and free looked good.

i uninstalled nsw2002 from winxp machine via the program uninstaller, then rebooted to complete the process (per on screen instructions).

then i turned to windows add/remove and got rid of the liveupdate stuff.

then i rebooted.

next i ran RegCleaner, scrolling through the main menu for anything symantec.

removed those items.

then i ran the registry cleaner tool and it flagged about twenty entries. none were what i could identify as symantec files for sure, but i didn't wait around, i trust RegCleaner, and whacked all twenty.

then i rebooted.

then i used EndItAll to close all running background applications except zonealarm and explorer and systray.

then, and only then, did i pop the nsw2003 cd in the drive tray and begin the install.

call me lucky. it all went well.

following this routine, it almost always does.
