The US and Canada too were both blessed with huge lands rich in resources that were sparsely populated. (yes we stole it all). Add to that, far more regular people came here to settle, not just adventurers. Not really the same as many other places in the Americas. It's that blend of work ethic and common free people that made the US and Canada successes. Yes I know the US had slavery into the the mid 19th century but that economy's death knell began with the American Civil War.
Many nation builders came to the these two countries, that too was luck I think but that's the way life goes. Then of course as independent countries we've known nothing but democracy, the form of government that sucks the least...by far.
