Letter to President Bush

Edward I. Koch Wednesday, April 9, 2003

April 8, 2003

The President The White House Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President:

Please permit me to add my thanks and congratulations to the millions you have and are receiving for all that you have done in standing up for America and leading the just war to liberate Iraq and put an end to Saddam Husseins evil regime.

Your unwavering support for Operation Iraqi Freedom displayed extraordinary courage, intellect, integrity and love of our country. Your leadership is matched by people in your Cabinet responsible for conducting the war including Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice. They, along with those who worked with them, especially the U.S. and all the Coalition military forces led by General Tommy Franks, deserve the thanks and applause of the American people for achieving the brilliant victories we have seen thus far.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair is one person you have singled out time and again during Operation Iraqi Freedom for the enormous support he has shown in providing support for the U.S. position at the United Nations, as well as armed forces, material resources, and continual emotional support in his bracing, brilliant speeches in the British Parliament and elsewhere in the world, often at great political risk to himself. Mr. Blair deserves special recognition for the unique partnership that he has provided to you in his capacity as Prime Minister.

I propose that you consider awarding Tony Blair honorary U.S. citizenship. President Kennedy bestowed that honor on Sir Winston Churchill in 1963. I also propose that you award him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In addition, I suggest that Congress award high honors to Prime Minister Blair, including the Congressional Gold Medal which it bestowed on Churchill in 1969, and that he be invited to speak before a joint session of Congress.

All the best.

Sincerely,

Edward I. Koch
