>> for extra credit, what did you take it to mean?<<

We won it fair and square, it's ours for the taking, and now, here, it is a gift to the Iraqi people.

Yes, I understand the symbolism perfectly well.

It wasn't the Iraqi people who were doing the fighting.

Someone said that 9/11 taught us two things. 1) The Middle East is rotten. 2) It's now our problem.

The Taliban was rotten. The Taliban was our problem. We solved the Taliban.

Saddam was rotten. Saddam was our problem. We solved Saddam.

Who's next?

FL,
The Lieutenants symbolism was inappropriate for the circumstances he was in. But having been a victim of 9/11, it was certainly understandable. Dont need sentences, just one word revenge. I was focusing more on the happy corporal chin who climbed up and put the flag on sadams head.
So yes it was unwise because we are not perfect but the proof of the pudding is how few incidents of this type actually have occurred and how well the US military is managing its troops. Nothing wrong with US and old Iraqi flags flying together. Perhaps we actually made a friend here in a more profound way than in Afganistan. This strikes me more like the fall of communism in EE than the fall of the Taliban. Free at last, Free at last, Great God Almighty we are free at last. Now to the hard work of turning the hope on the faces of iraqi citizens into a better reality. If we fail at this, the war will not be judged a success.
By the way its interesting to me that the democrats are now talking about wasting our treasure abroad while americans are in a recession. Add that to their fixation on the balanced budget instead of coming up with alternate growth plans to the Republicans and we have the makings of a new third party in the US, albeit the largest. mike
PS I know, i know you asked for one or two sentences on the Lieut and i rambled on. Sorry. mike
