Memsic said that a 43,000-square-foot facility would be fully operational and qualified by ISO standards before the end of 2003. The company's current manufacturing facility is ISO-9001 certified, and passed the ISO/TS 16949 certification audit in December 2002. At present Memsic uses foundries to manufacture CMOS circuitry on wafers before adding the MEMS structures, probing, packaging and testing devices at its Wuxi facility. Memsic has invested $3 million and intends its second facility to have a Class 100 clean room for the MEMS manufacturing process and a front-end process pilot line. The facility would include a packaging pilot line for low cost and innovative packaging development and a production test line for all product testing. It would be used for new product development beyond the current product lines. “MEMSIC's successful entry into the acceleration and motion sensing market greatly reduced product cost, and the sudden affordability of our innovative technology to the market stimulated rapid growth," said Yang Zhao, chief executive officer of Memsic, in a statement. "Investing and expanding our manufacturing capacity indicates our long term commitment to our customers and the market, where the demand for our stiction and particle free MEMS construction has exploded." Memsic has established manufacturing partnerships with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. and Fujitsu. “Memsic was ahead of the curve in recognizing the cost value in moving our manufacturing facility to Asia. Consequently, we have pulled ahead of the major semiconductor manufacturers who are currently shifting operations there," Zhao added.
