Two things are odd. The pool of infection in the Kowloon apartment building and the fact that many close family members did not get infected from some recipients.

As expected, medical people did get infected. What sort of transmission is it? Usually medical people are very cautious about touch and contamination. People in an apartment building are not routinely in contact close with each other. Perhaps it was due to sharing the elevator. This would point to a influenza-like transmission, whose most common vector is through touch, more than coughing or airborne transmission. If it were an airborne virus, and did not need aerosol suspension, then close contact would be all it would take. In some familes due to schedules, custom and the like, this sort of contact is not assured. If it infected from surfaces and objects it would be hard to imagine the vector unless it were door knobs or some agent like that.

It may be that it is a very common virus to which some have immunity, and for this reason, even in its obviously mutated form, it seems selective for no apparent reason.

The absolute origin is a mystery. Incubation in air-conditioning systems as Legionnaire's is a not usually considered with a virus. An animal virus is a possibility.

Whatever you do, in areas where the virus is a possibility, avoid close contact, and touch. It makes sense. Wash hands with soap with care, frequently.
