cho-- I was responding to the reflexively anti-American stance on the thread. While we all agree war is evil, and is the last resort, there is a certain grim reality that force is necessary to curb criminals. Some people hate the police, yet still want protection. The US is the world's policeman and if the Europeans want the role, and take the responsibility for it, I would be pleased. As we all know, defense is an enormous expense, and the Europeans have placed it upon American shoulders. The Balkans was a war that the US correctly felt should be dealt at a European level. They, because they refuse to pay the price for defense, couldn't do it and called us in. On one hand, they are critical and hate us for our being the only superpower. OTOH, they don't want to spend the money to be a counterbalance. I have many European friends who would love living in the US almost as much as criticizing us from the outside.

Whenever I talked to my anti-war academic friends, and it was often, my claim was that protesting this war has the effect--like it or not--of encouraging the Saddams of the world. It was the wrong war to oppose. And events seem to have proven us right--so far.

It still is important to find the WMD, and a paper trail about who was involved in their development. I suspect the righteous french may be a wee bit embarrassed by what turns up. I don't remember if I posted it, but that Russian convoy that was disabled was accused of carrying away documents by the Russian press.
