I read many Arabs voicing disapproval. They don't trust their own government, they don't trust us, but my sense is that they wouldn't trust us, regardless. They're just waiting for the opportunity to pounce on something and say, "you see? you see? I told you so!"

Yesterday was one of those 'unintended consequence' days the anti-war folks told us to fear. The unintended consquence was the total undermining of everything the Arab press had ever told the Arab people about Saddam, Iraq and the US. The shockwaves of this loss of credibility and the lack of curiosity that allowed it are starting to rumble through the Arab world.

250,000 soldiers fought and 100 died to make that happen. This one soldier's selfish act undermined all of it by providing the Arab media with EXACTLY the one image they needed to say 'We were right all along'. He turned a massive and unexpected victory into a small qualified victory.

His punishment should be reading every Maureen Dowd and Paul Krugman column for the past year. That'll fix him up in a hurry. ;-)

Paul
