Therein lies the rub doesn't it? This has been the issue behind all those dictatorships we supported. They were always a defense against something we didn't like. History suggests we are not going to change our ways. BUT, if we were to compromise a little and come up with a way to exclude the most extreme group but allow everyone else in, then perhaps everyone can live with that.

absolutely, once we agree on our principles, our ground rules. And, JohnM raised a particular concern of mine, the new democracies just might vote in strongly Islamic governments...are we prepared to live with this turn of events?

Just an observation....but I think the word democracy is way overused. Our system isnt a pure democracy (nor do I think most people wish it to be). We have all sorts of safeguards that limit the power of the masses.

If ME countries ended up with constitutional republics that voted in Islamic regimes, I think we would have to live with that. As long as those regimes respected basic human rights, and were subject to reelection every couple of years, I think we would have lessened the rage that is directed at the US greatly. It remains to be seen weather an Islamic party could mold itself to such a political outcome....but as Kumar has pointed out, there are communist parties in India that are voted into and out of power reguarly in state elections.

Perhaps there is hope....

If they can be voted out! That would be a remarkable accomplishment.

We are about to face a similar situation in Venezuala in August. Right now, Chavez is a democratically elected tyrant and the US has to live with him. If Chavez doesn't allow the referendum in August, it becomes a whole different ballgame.
