How do you deal with the contradictions?

I jotted myself a note -- I'll see if I can come up with a coherent answer.

Part of the justification for this war was preemption, even if not explicitly stated.

I frankly don't know how one could more explicitly state that was exactly the policy. What could you do beside writing papers to that effect from 91 forward and publishing them very openly as a cabinet in exile; once in power talking quite openly; then distributing a "new" foreign policy statement, widely advertised as such, which made pre-emption a central point. What did they leave out?

OK, I reviewed my thinking and statements and here it is in a nutshell:

>>Question for you. I know you were pro iraq policy [i.e. overthrow Saddam].

True, before even 'W' became President and learned where Iraq was.

>>And you indicated that you are against preemptive war

False, I don't believe I've said any such thing. I've just said that it is something to approach very, very cautiously. I felt it was justified in this case. (Did I mention very cautiously...?)

>>How do you deal with the contradictions?

I don't have any. I simply think Bush and company have down a piss poor job of handling the diplomacy and principles of the affair. I've never had a single doubt in our military's ability to accomplish it's assigned mission, whatever it turned out to be, with exceptional skill, dignity, and honor.
