Ted,

Wrong again! A majority of Americans wanted UN approval just prior to the war starting.

It may be a little misleading to say it that way. Some wanted it as a bonus, some as a pre-requisite. The number of those who wanted it as a pre-requisite kept shrinking as the war approached, as most from that camp moved to the camp of those who would take the UN approval as just a nice bonus.

Then there were those who were against war with or without the UN.
