How do you say it's okay to elect folk. Just make certain we (the US) approve of the folk you elect, however distantly removed our hand appears to be.

I think my post addressed that. As long as ME countries protect some basic human rights (along the lines of the bill of rights), and have routine open elections, we are going to have to live with whoever they elect.

It might not be the outcome we want....but I can live with a hostile government. It is the individual religous rage that we are trying to defuse. I think having a say in their local governments would go a long way in doing that.

That rhetoric pushes the expectations way too high.

I think you are putting to much weight on the rhetoric. If Iraq ends up with a system close to the US, it is hard to see people complaining that they dont have enough freedom to choose who and what they want. The word democracy has always been misused as well as overused.

Are there any "pure" democracies operational in the world? I assume that most countries have some checks on the rule of the majority.
