Daschle practically blamed the impending war on Bush, rather than Saddam Hussein (news - web sites): "I'm saddened, saddened that this president failed so miserably at diplomacy that we're now forced to war. Saddened that we have to give up one life because this president couldn't create the kind of diplomatic effort that was so critical for our country."
No, Mr. Minority Leader.

If any American lives are lost, it's not because of failed diplomacy. It's because ruthless enemies like Saddam are maneuvering to harm this nation, and President Bush (news - web sites) is acting now to prevent that.

Sen. John Kerry, who's running for president, called Bush "inept" and "self-defeating."

And Sen. Joe Lieberman (news - web sites), who should know better, faulted the Bush folks for their "unilateralist, divisive diplomacy, which has pushed a lot of the world away from us."

Let's be clear: These birds are free to say whatever pops into their heads - even if they voted to support the Bush policy last fall, and even if the decent thing would be to dummy up until the crisis has passed.

Meanwhile, don't be fooled by their boilerplate declamations of support for "the troops."

By encouraging the delusional Saddam Hussein to believe that political discord in America might ultimately save his bacon, the dissident Democrats are making things far more risky for the troops than they need to be.

Saddam is counting on world opinion to handcuff Bush & Co. - and let Saddam continue to do evil. He's been encouraged in that regard by France.

But France doesn't share America's interests.

Do the Democrats?

Time was when partisan politics "stopped at the water's edge" - to prevent a misreading of American resolve.

Even Hillary Clinton (news - web sites) knows better.

Said New York's junior senator: "At this critical juncture, it is important for all of us to come together in support of our troops and pray that, if war does occur, this mission is accomplished swiftly and decisively."

The state's senior senator, Charles Schumer, on the other hand, might as well move to Paris: "It's worth waiting a little extra time" to get more nations to join the fight, Monsieur Chuck said last weekend. "We need the support of the international community to fight the larger war on terrorism."

If he's right, America might as well hang it up now - because, if the past few months have proved anything, it's that the "international community" can't be relied upon when it comes to U.S. security.

Republicans may soon have cause to rejoice, perhaps, over the politics. The American people are rightly incensed by the Democrats' outrageous rhetoric.

But at what price?

The lives of young Americans?

For shame.
