"Reassure the chicken"

no amount of reassuring is going to make it all better if you run regcleaner and it screws everything up.

the other step i left out of my previous post regarding removal of NAV is the back up step. i always make a full system image (i like powerquest's DriveImage) so that if everything goes to pieces i can be back where i was within three minutes.

that is an amazing safety net, and better than any reassuring i can do. whatever net you are using, put it in place... make your back ups.

that said i will tell you that RegCleaner ( vtoy.fi ) is an awesome utility to keep in your tool kit. it has never ever let me down and i can't for the life of me think of anyone who has ever been damaged by it. quite the opposite, it keeps you out of trouble.

regcleaner's author has released a more potent version called called jv16 PowerTools ( vtoy.fi ) that some folks on the cl thread are using. i can't speak for it, however, as i am very confident in regcleaner and haven't felt compelled to migrate to the stronger stuff. <g>

if you go the regcleaner route, take note of the sequence of steps i laid out for using it... it might help.

good luck

I'm relatively new to Win XP and have some questions about registry cleaning.

Is there a registry cleaner in XP? I went to run command and tried "scanreg" and other similar commands but no result.

Sounds like this Power Tools program is good. Any people have problems with it? I don't download too many programs. Do I need to use a registry cleaner and, if so, how often.

Thanks again.

what an experience tonight, trying to uninstall nsw2002 from win2000, and install nsw2003.

i literally had to restore my operating system image three times, and it wasn't until the fourth attempt that i got nsw2003 to install properly.

and i did it by backing off on the "right" things to do! yep.

i used the windows add/remove program instead of the nsw uninstaller... i did *not* run regcleaner.... i left LivbeUpdate and LiveReg in place...

and most importantly... imo....

prior to closing norton applications for the uninstall, i disabled email protection and script blocking. an awful lot of scripts were being written during the install process (or so the progress updates flashing across my screen were telling me), and by failing to disable script blocking on prior uninstall attempts, i think the new program couldn't load properly.

i wish i could take credit for this last bit of wisdom, but i uncovered it in a symantec kb article.

anyway, it's up and running. where the winxp install worked like a charm, this one was very challenging.

:)
