Mainly a matter of morale and commitment. I think it was Napolean who said "the morale is to the physical as 10 is to 1". Its understandable that a lot of Iraqi's didn't care to fight a desperate battle against a superior force to try and protect a brutal thug.

You're right. Its too bad Saddam didn't go into exile before the war started.
