At the time of the Kosovo war, I thought the NATO treaty permitted calling a war whenever some of the members felt threatened by ongoing instability in the region. I believe it was you who pointed out the error of my understanding. Actually, it was Italy that was experiencing the most problems. A lot of refugees were crossing the Adriatic {?} and landing on Italian shores. Well, the defensive vs. offensive nature of NATO treaty is one part of it, but the other part, the part about members being threatened, the closest NATO member to the "action" is Greece, and they were the most reluctant of all to even go along, and let the US use their ports, and it is a far cry from initiating anything. Actually, it was Italy that was experiencing the most problems. A lot of refugees were crossing the Adriatic...or is it the Aegean, I can't remember....and landing on Italian shores. Its not ideological or partisan but rather something else. The "trust" and ideology are related, since generally, one gives a lot more slack to a person who is the representative of one's ideology than to someone who is a representative of opposing ideology. I definitely do. Maybe.....I can't really dispute the issue with you but the negative feelings are based more on instinct rather than reasoned thinking. ted
