I have mellowed about Mailer in recent years because one hears less and less about him. Did hear one story, though, about how his house in Provincetown was the source of a lot of loud partying, yelling, fighting, etc. until a genuine beefy muscular barrel-cheasted Italian fisherman came over and said, "Hey, I have to get up at two in the morning and I need some sleep before that. You cut out the noise," and that was the end of the noise. I guess he did get away with stabbing his wife, didn't he?
