I think Pre Election Bush, post election bush and pre 9/11 bush had a swagger about him that pissed off those on the left, perhaps rightfully so. The fact that he didnt win the popular vote didnt help at all. What the war opponents missed is the seminal change in the man post 9/11. Believe it or not i voted for gore--decided in the booth that bush wasnt smart enough. Like John M. I too can be in spiro agnews words "an effete intellectual snob".
I wonder how all of this would have turned out if gore had been elected? I will leave that unanswered. All i will say is that Post 9/11 Bush along with Tony Blair and our kids who risked it all have made me very proud. I am glad the brits are pleased as well. Mike

They have been concerned about the motives more then anything.

I think this is an important part of the protests. America has misused it's power in the past so there is no reason why it should be automatically trusted to use it's unchecked power well now. Now, America gets to demonstrate it's trustworthiness - or not. So far, it's been more right than wrong but it's still early.

I think the 'Bush' factor is mostly noise. When I saw the Frontline episode on the history of this conflict and it showed the explosive world reaction to Clinton bombing Baghdad in 1998 it was clear to me that this is an issue of trusting America and American power.

BTW, I didn't know the 'Times' is a Tory paper. Now I do, thanks for the info.
