Unix is another Operating system, like DOS or Windows.
It's not free - but companies like HP and Sun
package their versions of Unix - like HP-UX, and Solaris
for Sun.

Its "free" or, open with respect to its development. The free version has been Linux (an open source PC version of UNIX), now available under a GPL license. All other UNIX versions have been sold commercially like any other OS - including BSD, SCO and various versions bound to its platform (Sinix, MacOS X, Solaris, AIX).
